Leaves: Ovate and blunt, the upper ones usually lanceolate and scalloped; narrowed into a stalk or sessile and partly clasping the stem.

Inflorescence & flowers: Solitary, stalkless flowers in the leaf axils and at the stem tips. Calyx lobes clearly exceed the corolla; the calyx tube usually exceeds 10 mm.

Fruit: Capsule without a constriction at the tip.

Syrian distribution: Tartous, Kessab, Bhamra, south of Slenfe, Qadmous–Massiaf pass, Ain el Reida near Damascus, Qanaouat, Chahba and Banias.

Native range: Albania, Algeria, Azores, Baleares, Canary Is., Corse, Cyprus, East Aegean Is., Eritrea, France, Greece, Iran, Iraq, Italy, Kriti, Lebanon-Syria, Libya, Madeira, Morocco, NW. Balkan Pen., Palestine, Portugal, Sardegna, Sicilia, Spain, Transcaucasus, Tunisia, Turkmenistan, Türkiye.

Introduced into: Germany.
