Leaves: In the broader account, sheaths hairless and without auricles; ligule short and truncate. Blades linear, initially flat and later rolled, hairy on the inner surface near the base.

Inflorescence & flowers: The broader account describes a loose, spreading, many-flowered panicle up to 40 cm long. Its fine, rough, repeatedly branched branches occur in groups of four, eight or more. Spikelets small, ovoid, often violet, commonly on stalks longer than themselves; the key gives their length as 3–3.5 mm. Lemmas hairless and blunt, with a deciduous terminal awn 3–5 mm long projecting beyond the glumes. Mouterde specifically distinguishes forma thomasii by aborted spikelets on the lower branches.

Lebanese distribution: The combined Oryzopsis miliacea account lists Saida, Beirut–Saida, Beirut, Ras Chekka, Tripoli, Saida–Nabatiye, Deir el Qamar, Kahale, Jamhour, Broummana, Bikfaya, Rayfoun, Douma, Jabal Terbol, Ain Zehalta and Zahle. These localities are not individually assigned to forma thomasii.

Syrian distribution: The combined account lists Massiaf, Nahr el Kebir, Bhamra, Slenfe, Ras el Bassit, Karadourane and Salihiye, without separately assigning localities to forma thomasii.

Recorded locations: Kornet Chehwan.

Native range: Algeria, Baleares, Cyprus, East Aegean Is., Egypt, Greece, Italy, Kriti, Lebanon-Syria, Morocco, NW. Balkan Pen., Palestine, Sardegna, Sicilia, Spain and Türkiye.
