Utricles : Greenish with reddish-brown spots, becoming tawny or reddish-brown at maturity; ellipsoid to subovoid, with faint nerves and a very short beak.

Leaves : Shorter than stems, flat, distinctly keeled; margins and keel scabrous. Ligule oval, rounded; basal sheaths reddish-brown.
